  • The Central Bureau of Investigation , in a court submission, has highlighted that an “in-depth investigation” is on to “collect evidence on the aspect of abetment/conspiracy/harbouring the accused Sanjay Roy” and that “incriminating recorded calls and videos have been found from the cellphones of former RG Kar principal Sandip Roy and former officer-in-charge of Tala police station which indicates that both of them wanted to “hush up the rape and murder of a junior doctor” at the hospital.

On October 7, the CBI in its first chargesheet named civic volunteer Sanjay Roy as the only person directly connected with the rape and murder of the junior doctor at RG Kar medical college hospital, highlighting 11 points of evidence against him.

“Further, an in-depth investigation is being carried out to collect evidence on the aspect of abetment/conspiracy/harbouring the accused Sanjay Roy in the commission of this gruesome rape and murder,” submission by CBI (a copy of which is with The Express) highlighted.

According to sources, this indicated that the agency is conducting its investigation to collect evidence against any possible persons who have harbored or helped Roy or entered in a conspiracy in any manner.

The CBI made these claims in a submission to the court of Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM) Sealdah on Friday, while seeking extension of judicial remand of Ghosh and Mondol.

Both were remanded in judicial custody till November 4 by the court.

“That the extraction of data of mobile phones of both the accused persons has been received from CFSL, Kolkata and the same has been scrutinised: It is clear from a number of calls that the accused persons wanted to hush up the incident as there are a number of recorded incriminating calls as well as videos in the extracted data.

Verification/investigation on the content of their telephonic versions with other witnesses and B-parties is continuing and after their examination, further interrogation of accused Abhijit Mondal and Sandip Ghosh may be required,” the CBI told the court.

“…the investigation on the aspect of destruction/attempt to destruction of evidence and hushing up the matter of rape and murder into suicide is still going on in full swing, and relevant witnesses are being examined,” the submission added.

The agency highlighted that extension of judicial custody is also necessary to prevent Ghosh and Mondol from “tampering with evidence yet to be collected against them.”

Both Sandip Ghosh and Abhijit Mondol were produced before Additional Chief Judicial Magistrate (ACJM), Sealdah, where the former denied permission for a narco-analysis test and the latter refused to undergo polygraph test as appealed by the central investigating agency.

The two were arrested on September 14 in connection with the rape-murder case. Days earlier, on September 2, Ghosh was also arrested along with three others by the Anti-Corruption Branch for alleged financial irregularities and corruption at RG Kar.
