A woman allegedly stabbed to death a man in public in West Bengal’s Hooghly district on Saturday. Police have arrested the woman, who they believe was in a relationship with the victim, identified as Tapas.
The police identified the woman as Shabnam, who used to live with her husband in Rishara till recently shifting to a rented house in the Khurigachi area.
CCTV footage shows the man and two women walking along the road in the Bhadreshwar Khurigachi area before the incident.
“An argument ensued and one of the women suddenly attacked the man,” a police officer said. “A cyclist passing by witnessed the incident, but the two women walked away as if nothing had happened.”
The police rushed to the scene after receiving reports of a man lying on the street. “He was pronounced dead at the scene,” said the police officer.
Amit P Javalgi, Police Commissioner, Chandannagar, said, “Prima facie, the incident occurred due to internal disputes. The accused has been arrested and is being interrogated. The other woman who was present at the spot is also being questioned.”
The man’s body was sent to Chandannagar Hospital and an autopsy was conducted at Chuchura Imambara District Hospital.
Local councillor Suresh Sau said Tapas’s wife had left him.
