• GTA plans to start helicopter services in Mirik

  • 12 Siliguri: Tourists visiting the Hills can now get an aerial view of Mt Kanchenjunga as the Gorkhaland Territorial Administration (GTA) is exploring plans to start helicopter tourism in Mirik, a picturesque town located around 49km from Siliguri. The GTA officials said the initiative aims to provide stunning aerial views of Mt Kanchenjunga and the scenic landscapes surrounding Mirik Lake and the tea gardens.

    Norden Sherpa, an executive member of the GTA tourism department said: "We want to promote Mirik as a wedding destination with the helicopter services along with offering scenic helicopter rides, providing aerial views of the tea gardens, Mirik Lake, surrounding hills and Kanchenjunga.

    "

    The helipad was constructed in 1991 by DGHC chairman Subash Ghising. Norden saidthe department wanted to use the helipad to generate revenue and promote the region. "Currently, the GTA is in the initial stages of planning and seeking to partner with private agencies to commence operations," he said.
