Kolkata: A pool car, ferrying 12 students home from school, caught fire around 1.45 pm at the crossing of Salt Lake First Crossroad and Salt Lake Bypass. All the children were unhurt after being evacuated by traffic cops and Metro traffic marshals.
The pool car had just picked up the children from an English medium school in Salt Lake HB Block and was heading towards New Town when it caught fire and was engulfed in thick black smoke.
“We saw the car’s engine catch fire while it was still moving. The driver managed to stop the car and jumped out of the vehicle. There were several scared and screaming children inside the car. We rushed to rescue the children out of the car first. Fire extinguishers and buckets of water was used to control the fire, before a fire tender reached the spot and doused the blaze,” said Abhijit Sarkar, a traffic marshall who was deployed near Nicco Park.
