Kolkata: A civic volunteer took her own life late on Saturday night in Rabindranagar near Parnasree, after her husband, a Kolkata Police home guard, allegedly forced her to undergo an abortion. Loknath Ghosh, the accused, was arrested from Diamond Harbour and charged with abetment to suicide.
A diary recovered from the room of the deceased, Meena Das, on Monday morning led police to a suicide note in which she detailed the abuse she had endured at the hands of Ghosh.
The diary revealed that Meena, who worked as a civic volunteer at the Metiabruz police station, married him after they developed a romantic relationship. He did not disclose that he was already married and had two children.
The discovery of his first marriage led to discord between Das and Ghosh. Meena, who was pregnant, was allegedly threatened and forced to undergo an abortion. The mother of the deceased, Behula Das, claimed that Ghosh’s family mentally harassed her daughter. The diary also mentioned that she was called to Uluberia and tortured by the first wife and her family members.
The autopsy report indicated that Meena died from hanging. The accused was sent to police custody for three days by an Alipore court. The deceased’s family claimed that the first wife’s family was also involved in this incident and requested their inclusion in the investigation of this case.
