  • Kolkata: A 21-year-old Jadavpur University undergraduate student, who went ‘missing’ from campus because he did not wish to pursue physics any more after passing his exams for two consecutive years, was rescued by police from Howrah station while he was trying to board a train to Puri.

According to DC (SSD-Jadavpur) Bidisha Kalita, a woman from Guptipara came to Jadavpur PS on Monday and reported that her son, a JU UG-3 student pursuing physics, had gone missing from the university since 8 pm.

Accordingly, a missing diary was lodged.

Police learnt that the student did not want to study physics honours but was being forced by his family. His classmates said he was depressed and was under treatment. On Oct 21, he came to the university as usual. After the day’s classes, he reportedly left. Since then, his cellphone was switched off. Cops resorted to tracking both his mobile and CCTV at various public places to spot him and alert GRP at Howrah station who stopped him from boarding the train.

“We are checking if he had left home earlier as well and whether there are other reasons for doing so. We are talking to his classmates and family members,” said an officer.

Police said they have advised counselling for the student. “Given that he is uncomfortable pursuing his course, we have requested his parents not to put undue pressure on him. Steps should be taken to ensure that he doesn’t take any other drastic step,” said the officer.
