  • Kolkata: West Bengal Federation of United Nations Associations (WBFUNA) on Thursday presented humanitarian awards to three organisations — Hope Foundation, Earth Day Network and Smile Foundation — during a celebration of United Nations Day 2024.

The event marks the anniversary of the United Nations Charter’s enactment on Oct 24, 1945, which established the UN and set the foundation for promoting global peace, security and human rights.

Speaking at the occasion, Lok Sabha MP Saugata Roy discussed India’s evolving role within the UN, contrasting past engagement under Jawaharlal Nehru with the current approach under PM Narendra Modi. “Surprised as to how little importance India gives to the UN now. Earlier, a parliamentary delegation used to go to the UN General Assembly every year. In Modi’s time, no MPs are sent,” said Roy.

WBFUNA chairman Sitaram Sharma said: “The day commemorates formation of an era where equality, peace and cooperation are valued over war.”
