  • Kolkata: Bengal is set to get its second supercritical power plant after Sagardighi as the state cabinet on Thursday gave the nod for a 660-MW supercritical power plant at Durgapur Projects Ltd (DPL).

Sagardighi, the first supercritical power plant in the state, would be completed early next year.

An official said the state govt had recently decided to set up two supercritical power plants and DPL was given approval for setting up one of them.

The state wants to set up the power plants through public-private partnership mode, the official added.

On Monday, the state had approved the setting up of 1,600-MW supercritical power plants on a PPP basis. CM Mamata Banerjee had also announced that the state would come up with many power projects. Experts said the total investment for the project would be over Rs 12,000 crore. “The cost per megawatt would be Rs 7-8 crore,” an expert said.

State power minister Aroop Biswas said that the 660-MW supercritical power plant at Sagardighi was ready to be commissioned soon. “Sagardighi is about 95% complete. It should be operational by March 2025,” he said.

At the moment, state power utilities — WBPDCL, WBSEDCL and DPL — have a combined capacity of 5,886 MW. WBPDCL has a capacity of 4,265 MW, WBSEDCL 1,071 MW and DPL 550 MW.
