Kolkata: Members of West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Front (WBJDF) sent out the message at the mass convention, held at RG Kar Medical College on Saturday, that they will continue their movement and announced that they will march to the CGO Complex on Oct 30.
They said they will continue their stir till the administration meets all their demands. They also took out a rally on the campus later on Saturday evening.
The convention was the first programme of the junior doctors after they called off the hunger strike last Tuesday. Around 2,000 people, including WBJDF members, attended it. The PJB auditorium was packed, so a giant screen was installed outside for around 500-odd people who sat on the grounds to catch the event.
It coincided with introduction of a new platform of junior doctors — West Bengal Junior Doctors’ Association.
The WBJDF termed the formation of the new body as “an attempt to thwart their movement”. Debasish Haldar, a junior doctor of MCH and a representative of WBJDF, said, “Those accused of perpetrating threat culture on campuses have come up with the new body. They are trying to hinder our movement but we will not let them do so. We called off the strike after a request of Abhaya’s parents but that does not mean that our movement has ceased.” He added, “We will continue our stir on campuses and on streets. Today, a convention was planned at Kalyani Medical College but it was not allowed.”
Ranjan Bhattacharyya, joint secretary of IMA Bengal, said, “Now a parallel association has been formed with those accused of threat culture. WBJDF won’t allow them to foil our movement.” Parthasarathi Sengupta, a senior advocate who was at the event, said, “Abhaya is the symptom of a disease and we will have to cure it by exposing all culprits.”
