  • 12 Kolkata: A post on social media about mayor Firhad Hakim, from a handle carrying DYFI neta Minakshi Mukherjee’s photograph, sparked a controversy on Saturday. Trinamool workers filed a complaint against Mukherjee at Chetla police station.

The complaint alleged that the post was an attempt to disrupt communal harmony, a claim made by Hakim himself. Reacting to it, the mayor said it was done deliberately with the intention of creating unrest.

“Now that the CPM neta is saying that she doesn’t know anything about it is not acceptable. Did she bother to try to bring the matter to the notice of the police? If not, she can’t deny responsibility. We need to unmask the person who is involved in such an act. It is a dangerous trend and may lead to serious unrest among citizens,” mayor Hakim said at the civic headquarters.

Former Trinamool Rajya Sabha MP Kunal Ghosh also took to social media, launching an attack on the young Left functionary and demanding an apology. “Shame on you, Minakshi! Trinamool’s Firhad Hakim may be a political adversary of CPM, but distorting his image is disgraceful and reflects poor taste,” Ghosh wrote on Facebook.

Mukherjee clarified that someone used a fake profile in her name to make the post. Mukherjee said she had filed a complaint with the cybercrime department at Lalbazar regarding the fake profile as she never endorsed cheap politics. Mukherjee also posted that she had only one Facebook account, one Facebook page and one X handle and nothing else. “But other than these, there could be social media accounts using my name and photograph. I have no involvement in managing or posting from these accounts nor am I aware of any such posts,” she said.
