Parents of R G Kar hospital rape-murder victim have requested an appointment with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Kolkata this weekend.
Shah is scheduled to land in Kolkata on Saturday night. He is slated to inaugurate the New Passenger Terminal Maitri Dwar (Second Cargo Gate) at Petrapol near the India-Bangladesh border on Sunday.
On Sunday, Shah is also scheduled to preside over a BJP program at the Eastern Zonal Cultural Centre (EZCC) in Salt Lake and kick off a party membership drive. The BJP’s number of seats dropped to 12 from 18 in West Bengal in the recently held Lok Sabha polls. BJP sources said the senior leader might guide the state party leadership in the wake of that debacle.
However, it was not yet clear whether the Union minister will meet the parents of the junior doctor who was raped and murdered at the RG Kar Hospital and Medical College on August 9.
On Tuesday, the parents of the victim wrote to Shah stating that they were under “tremendous mental pressure” and “want to discuss a few things regarding the situation”.
“After that heinous unforeseen incident happened to our daughter, we have been going through tremendous mental pressure and feeling helpless now. Sir, I along with my wife want to meet with you to discuss a few things regarding the situation and pray for your guidance and help,” the email to Shah from the victim’s father stated.
“We do not have any information regarding any meeting between Amit Shah ji and the victim’s parents. However, it is not unlikely that he will meet the parents of the victim since it is such a heart-wrenching issue. It is between the Union home minister and them,” said a senior state BJP leader.
“The victim’s parents are eagerly waiting for Amit Shah. Till now I cannot tell you whether there is a confirmation of a meeting. What I can tell you is that the parents are under tremendous mental pressure. They want justice and want it sooner than later,” said a close friend of the victim’s parents.
The parents of the victim have been part of the state-wide protests after the victim’s body was discovered on August 9. In statements to the media, the victim’s parents had pointed fingers at the state administration and the police for allegedly trying to portray the incident as suicide and cremate the body hurriedly against their will. The victim’s parents also alleged that some officials of the Kolkata Police tried to bribe them after the incident.
