  • Kolkata: The New Town Kolkata Development Authority (NKDA) will install high mast LED floodlights in the periphery areas of New Town for better illumination.

Officials said that currently, there are around 36 high mast floodlights installed at several points in New Town at busy and important places. “The periphery and border areas of New Town are developing in a rapid pace with lot of construction and other activities., so better and brighter illumination is needed,” said an official. At present, most of the streetlights in the periphery and border areas of New Town are old sodium vapour lights.

Officials mentioned LED light panels will be of 200 and 250 watts, similar to the existing LED high-mast light panels in New Town. The high mast poles have an average height of around 12.5 meters, with the light fittings placed at the top. “Each of the poles has multiple light fittings as per requirement,” said an official.

“Around Rs 40 lakh monthly electricity bill is generated bow, almost half of what it used to be when the streetlights had sodium vapour lights,” an NKDA official said.

Bidhannagar Municipal Corporation recently received approval of Rs 2.9 crore from the state to further shift to LED streetlights under the state’s Green Cities Mission scheme for entire Salt Lake and many parts of Rajarhat Gopalpur.

“Installing LED lights is good as not only is it environmentally friendly and brighter, but it also saves much of the electricity bill,” said Tamal Pal, a resident of Salt Lake’s HB Block.

The entire 8.4 km stretch of VIP Road will soon get LED streetlights, replacing the sodium vapour lights. The state public works department has issued a work order and the project is expected to be completed by Dec this year.

The high mast LED flood lights will be installed in front of Infosys, Rajarhat PS, Vidhyasagar Matrisadan Hospital and infront of Derozio college among other periphery areas.
