• Plants to fight cracker pollution

  • 12 Kolkata: A fireworks retailer at the Baji Bazar in Maidan is handing out chrysanthemum saplings for free to customers to espouse a green cause and combat pollution.

‘The pollution caused by fireworks is just for one day. It does increase the suspended particulate matter but there are several other contributors to pollution year-round, like construction and auto emission. If the next generation is to breathe freely and also enjoy Diwali, we have to think green and plant trees," said Mahendra Gupta of Novelty Store.

It was his son, Rohit, who hit upon the idea after he received a plant from a resort he stayed at in Odisha's Simlipal Forest. "The idea was novel, and it struck a chord," Rohit said.

Mahendra and Rohit have stocked 500 saplings along with fireworks, like flowerpots, sparklers and shots. While all other stalls are also showcasing fireworks in attractive packages, it is the greenery in the Guptas' stall that is attracting attention.

The Gupta family has been in the fireworks business for nearly five decades and has been associated with the Baji Bazar since its inception in 1994. But this is the first time the family has embraced greenery, and now plans to do so every year.

"We were initially doubtful about whether customers would want to take a sapling. But they were glad to get them. We hope they will not only nurture these plants but take to gardening and make their homes greener," the senior Gupta said.
