123 Kolkata: The CBI in its report to the Calcutta High Court on Wednesday submitted that former R G Kar principal Sandip Ghosh had opened his fixed deposit account with the State Bank of India between 2021 and 2023, the period under the scanner of the CBI as directed by the high court. The CBI counsel pleaded that permission from the HC to Ghosh to liquidate the FD would adversely affect the ongoing investigation into the alleged financial irregularities committed by Ghosh, now in judicial custody at Presidency Correctional Home.
Justice Rai Chattopadhyay, while handing over the CBI report to Ghosh's counsel, directed his wife, the petitioner, to file an affidavit to the regular bench in response to the CBI report before liquidating the FD .
On Monday, Justice Subhendu Samanta directed the CBI to submit the report on or before Wednesday after the wife of the accused moved the high court complaining that the State Bank of India was not allowing liquidation of the FD accounts of her husband lying with the bank. Advocate for the petitioner had submitted before the vacation bench of Justice Samanta that the petitioner wanted to liquidate the FD to meet the regular financial needs of the family while he was in custody.
The advocate for the petitioner had submitted that in reply to his email to SBI regarding liquidation of the FD, the bank wanted the petitioner to be present in person before the bank to sign the necessary papers for liquidation. The advocate had prayed to the court to direct SBI to send bank officials to Presidency Correctional Home and get the papers signed by the accused.
