  • 12 Kolkata: There is a new twist to traditional illumination this Diwali, with water-sensor diyas becoming the star attraction in the city's light market. While string LED lights, star lights and wish-ball multi-coloured lights remained a hit amongst buyers looking for minimal decoration, battery-operated candles, diya-shaped chandeliers and net mesh string lights dominated the light market. A few new designs, like light bulbs in bottle-shaped objects on strings, were on display for "customers with eccentric demands".

The rising demand from buyers looking for safe and hassle-free illumination has led to sellers bringing in innovative products and designs.

"I have been buying these diyas since they became popular in the market two years ago. I have pets at home and they can be protected from the flame. Moreover, if I put this on my balcony, people will not light their firecrackers from them and create a nuisance," said Anil Lalwni, who works in event management.

Flameless candles have also taken centre stage in the market. They come encased in intricate temple-like structures, blending tradition with modern sensibilities, while ensuring a safer experience.

Every year, Kolkata's wholesale light market swarms with people from different corners of the state ahead of Diwali and Kali Puja to buy lights in bulk. Retailers, event planners and individuals are catered to by more than 2,500 shops on both sides of Ezra Street in central Kolkata.

A homemaker said she comes to buy lights from Ezra Street every year considering the low price and fresh designs. "Torans with lights are my favourite this year. You can put it outside the entrance as it comes in strings made with beads and lights. They cost me Rs 600," she said.

A five-layered diya stand was in the market for three years, a shop owner said, but a new design has included rotating layers. "I have sold around 25-30 pieces till now. It's a big hit," he said. Lights in trident shape were also a new inclusion in the market.

Shop owner Md Moinuddin said, "Many designs are new this time but there are also several with slight tweaks of last year's popular lights."
