  • A woman in her 20s was allegedly gang raped in front of her husband on the Kalyani-Barrackpore Expressway in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal on Tuesday night, police said.

    Eight persons, all residents of Kanchrapara, have been arrested, said police.

    According to police, the couple was travelling on the Kalyani-Barrackpore Expressway on Tuesday night when a group of men waylaid them.

    “Several miscreants were drinking while sitting there. They allegedly pulled her and raped her. After hearing the screams of the woman, people from the nearby areas came running. Seeing them, the group of miscreants fled,” a police officer said on the condition of anonymity.

    The woman filed a complaint at the Kalyani Police Station on Wednesday morning after which the police started the probe.

    At first, the police arrested four persons. “Based on the information provided by them during interrogation, we arrested four more, who were allegedly involved in the crime,” said the police officer.

    All the eight arrested accused were presented before a court, which remanded them in police custody.

    “A team of forensic experts reached the crime spot today (Wednesday) to collect evidence. Further action will be taken on the basis of the collected evidence. The probe is still on,” said the officer.
