Kolkata: A 54-year-old resident of Azadgarh area near Tollygunge was allegedly assaulted on Sunday evening for protesting against the bursting of firecrackers by members of a local club.
The complainant, Sanjay Bhattacharya, claimed he was attending to his uncle at home, who had cancer and was in an extremely critical condition. The latter died around 10.30 am on Monday.
The police registered a case in this regard based on a complaint filed with DCP SSD. A counter case was also filed by the local club members, claiming high-handedness by Bhattacharya and his associates. No one has been arrested in either case.
According to Sanjay, the Kali Puja is held every year near his residence. "When the immersion procession began, the DJ started playing loud music. Along with it, loud crackers were burst in front of the house. I stepped out and lodged a protest as I had two aged people in the house who were unwell. One uncle aged 79 was battling cancer and critical. Another uncle aged 72 wasn't well," Sanjay said on Monday.
When Sanjay reportedly tried to reason, an argument broke out with the club members. In the heat of the moment, Sanjay reportedly slapped a young man, the son of one of his old associates. Even as the locals left, they returned with a larger mob. Sanjay was allegedly pinned to the ground and assaulted.
The local club members claimed the charges against them are fake as they honoured Sanjay's wish and did not fix any microphone near his residence. "We were not even near his residence when he began threatening us and slapped one of us," claimed one of the accused.
The police said they registered a case and a counter case in this regard after receiving two separate complaints. "We are checking CCTV footage, and raids have begun in this regard. We have received several inputs and are investigating those leads too," said DC (SSD) Bidisha Kalita.
