  • The alleged rape of a 14-year-old schoolgirl in Gaighata area of North 24 Parganas district sparked a debate on women’s safety in West Bengal with both the ruling and Opposition parties demanding the strictest punishment for the accused.

The ruling TMC MLA from Balagadh, Manoranjan Vyapari, said, “Bengal wasn’t like this but now over a period of time we are hearing minors are being raped and murdered. Who are these people committing such a crime? Stringent punishment must be served to them.” The Gaighata incident closely follows similar cases of minors being raped in Alipurduar and Murshidabad districts.

“This ugly social crime stems from brute instincts among local acquaintances… nothing to do with general law and order… But the question is, why this rape, murder, heinous crime, hanging, arrest, agitation, media publicity, social media activism does not stop? Dhananjay, or

Nirbhaya’s killers of Delhi, this perverse disease cannot be reduced in society even by hanging? It’s proven from the past… If a minor cannot be safe with an adult she knows, what responsibility is this society fulfilling?” TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh posted on X on Saturday.

BJP MLA and Leader of Opposition in Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, who met the family of a 5-year-old girl who was allegedly raped and killed in Alipurduar district on Sunday, demanded that the government should introspect what’s wrong with the system and how to tackle the situation proactively.

Asking the people to “take revenge” against the ruling TMC government for the rape and murder of trainee woman doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, in August, during an election rally in Alipurduar district on Sunday, Adhikari claimed that a change in government would ensure that the accused receives more stringent punishment.

While campaigning for the upcoming bypolls at Madarihat, Adhikari said, “A 31-year-old woman doctor went to take rest, but who raped and killed the doctor? He is part of (CM) Mamata Banerjee’s civic police. Who tried to remove evidence of the crime? A doctor who was close to the ruling party and the officer in charge of the Tala police station.”

“This is the first vote after RG Kar rape and murder. Don’t you want to take revenge?,” he asked. In a sharp response to Adhikari’s statement, Ghosh said, “… If the BJP wants to fight the polls on RG Kar, we will raise the cases of Unnao and Hathras as well as Madhya Pradesh and Gujarat issues…”
