12 Behrampore: A woman lodged a police complaint accusing a Trinamool Congress councillor of molestation and assault in Behrampore's Palpara on Sunday night, sparking tension in the area.
Councillor Babon Roy denied the charges. He claimed that he had rushed to the spot to arrange for the treatment of an injured youth.
Sources said the youth, Rahul Roy Chowdhury, was allegedly assaulted over a sum he had borrowed from the complainant's husband. The councillor said the woman lodged a false complaint after police arrested her husband for the brawl.
The man had given Rs 10,000 to Rahul a year ago, but he failed to return the money "on time". The problems allegedly started when Rahul faulted on the due instalments for several months.
On Sunday, the man and his friends went to Rahul's house for the money when things flared up. The woman and her son also arrived at the scene.
She said: "My husband had given money to Rahul as he asked for help. But he kept harassing my husband. He had promised to repay on Sunday, but he failed. Rahul and his companions then attacked my husband. When I went to the spot and asked why they had attacked my husband, the councillor molested me and attacked my 16-year-old son."
Police said they had received two complaints and were probing all angles.
Naru Gopal Mukherjee, the chairman of Behrampore municipality, said: "Let police investigate, we have faith in the police administration."
