12 Kolkata: Two college students in their early 20s were swept away and drowned in the Hooghly river at a Sodepur ghat on the northern fringes of Kolkata while the two were bursting firecrackers by the riverbank on Sunday evening. Divers from the disaster management group of the Barrackpore Commissionerate were deployed for the search operation and recovered the bodies.
The incident took place at "Babaji Gangar Ghat" near Khardah, where four friends, including the victims, identified as Samriddha Banerjee and Debjit Mukherjee, both first-year BA students were bursting firecrackers.
A police team from Khardah PS accompanied by divers rushed to the spot. The bodies of the victims were later fished out of the river around 10 pm on Sunday, nearly a couple of hours after the duo had drowned.
