12 Kolkata: The Kolkata Metropolitan Development Authority (KMDA), custodian of Rabindra Sarobar, will upgrade the inner roads and drainage system in the section opposite Menoka Cinema. The estimated cost has been fixed at Rs 2 crore.
Also, the peripheral pavement on both sides of Baroj Road that connects Southern Avenue with Lake Gardens flyover will also be spruced up at a cost of Rs 35 lakh.
Officials said they recently received complaints about waterlogging and the poor condition of the roads from morning walkers at the Lake. The roads have become battered due to wear and tear. "Agencies are to be engaged to take up the revamp work," said an official.
KMDA officials mentioned that the existing drainage line towards the Tollygunge side of the Sarobar was worn out and lost its capacity to flush out excess stormwater, causing waterlogging during heavy rain.
"The plan is to revamp the drainage system by installing new pipes, which will have longer durability," said an official. The inner roads of the Sarobar in the southern portion will also be upgraded, officials said. The authorities will soon initiate the process to engage an agency for executing the project.
KMDA is also planning to engage an agency for cleaning and maintenance of the entire Lake premises along with the water bodies until Dec next year.
"The plan is to have daily cleaning and regular maintenance of the Lake premises as well as the banks of the water bodies," said an official. KMDA recently purified the entire water body of the Sarobar by spraying quicklime.
