  • 12 Kolkata: A gang of five arrived in a car, waylaid a truck on Maniktala Main Road near the Kakurgachhi crossing around 1.50 am on Wednesday, threw out the driver at gunpoint and drove away in the goods vehicles in the dead of the night. Following a complaint from the driver, Devendra Chaubey, cops from the Phoolbagan police station and the detective department anti-robbery section launched an investigation and recovered the truck, abandoned around 230 km away at Islampur in Murshidabad. No one has yet been arrested.

Police said a financial dispute, which had prompted a shift in ownership of the truck, could be the primary reason behind the crime.

DCP (eastern suburban) Gaurav Lal said Chaubey, the truck driver, told police he was headed towards Strand Road to hand over the truck keys to the owner, who lived there. As he neared Kakurgachhi, a speeding car braked in front and blocked his way. "There were five people inside, four of whom alighted, opened the truck driver's cabin door and got into the goods vehicle," police said Chaubey told them. "The accused reportedly hit Chaubey. One pointed a gun at him and snatched away his mobile and the truck keys. Chaubey was pushed out of the truck, which the accused drove away. The car driver waiting on the road, too, left."

"Preliminary probe shows a dispute between the current and former truck owner over dues. Investigations are on," said DCP Lal.
