  • 12 Kolkata: A 67-year-old man, the father of a doctor, was arrested on Thursday for allegedly raping a class-X student after he scaled two roofs to enter the girl's room in Hasnabad on Wednesday evening. Police said the suspect reportedly climbed and crossed adjoining buildings before accessing the room where the 16-year-old girl was sleeping alone. The accused, identified as Paritosh Sarkar, a neighbour of the survivor, was remanded in police custody for five days after being produced in a Basirhat court on Thursday afternoon.

According to family sources, the parents of the girl left her at home while they went to Kolkata to visit a relative on Wednesday. "Seizing this opportunity, the accused, one of our neighbours and the father of a well-known doctor at a hospital in Kolkata, climbed over the roofs of two houses and entered the room where my daughter was sleeping alone. Then he raped her and fled the spot," the girl's mother said in her complaint lodged with Hasnabad police station.

The family also claimed that the accused threatened to kill the girl if she dared to inform anyone at home about the incident. When the girl's parents returned home on Thursday evening, she broke down in tears and narrated her ordeal.

The girl's family has also claimed that the accused had molested her earlier, and that they had warned him that they would take legal action against him if he harassed her further. The girl's mother said, "The elderly man had harassed my daughter several times. This time, he took advantage of our absence from home to commit this misdeed on Wednesday. We have demanded an exemplary punishment for the accused."

Soon after receiving the complaint, police arrested the accused from his residence. "The accused was arrested for allegedly raping the girl and he was produced in court. The girl was sent to a hospital for a medical examination, and her confidential statement was also recorded. An investigation is underway in this connection," Hossain Mehedi Rehman, SP, Basirhat told TOI.
