  • A woman was allegedly gang raped in Garia area of South 24 Parganas district in West Bengal after she agreed to go for pandal hopping with a man she met on Facebook during Kali Puja.

According to the complaint lodged by the woman, in her mid-20s, she had befriended one Rajib Sardar through Facebook a few months ago. The two decided to meet on Kali Puja and go for pandal hopping. On October 31 (Thursday), she travelled to Garia railway station where she met Sardar. He then allegedly asked her to accompany him to his friend’s residence.

At the place of Sardar’s friend, the woman alleged that she was served a soft drink after drinking which she “fell unconscious”. “In the morning when she woke up, she realised that she had been gang raped by 4 to 5 persons. She called a friend who drove her home. Later, she felt unwell and admitted to a hospital,” a police officer said, quoting the woman’s complaint.

“Prima facie, four persons are involved and they have been arrested. Rajib Sardar alias Babusona and Rakesh Naskar were arrested on Monday. Two others, identified as Mrinmoy Sardar (Landen) and Subrata Das, were arrested on Wednesday. All the four accused are residents of Garia,” said the police officer, adding further investigations are on.

The four have been booked for gang rape and abduction, the officer added.
