  • 12 Kolkata: Cops have intensified crackdown on illegal parking in both Kolkata and New Town. The Bidhannagar Police has prosecuted 40 motorists at Salt Lake Sector V between Wednesday and Thursday in a fresh drive. The Kolkata Police carried out a special drive against illegal parking in large parts of central Kolkata, covering the business zone of Posta, Burrabazar, and Strand Road. As many as 62 prosecutions were completed in these areas in the past 72 hours, said Kolkata police sources.

Though KP traffic cops claimed the drive was aimed at streamlining vehicles for the Chhath festival, sources at Lalbazar said the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee's latest directives on illegal parking and decluttering central Kolkata led to the prompt action. Cops said that apart from prosecuting the individuals, efforts were made to raise awareness against illegal parking among the common people.

"There are adequate parking areas in Sector V, yet many people still park their vehicles illegally on the roadside. Illegal bike parking, in particular, is increasing and causing traffic congestion. We couldn't sustain the drive because of Chhath on Friday, but from Saturday onwards the drive will resume," said a senior officer of Bidhannagar city police. Lalbazar has also asked cops to concentrate on illegal parking by trucks, especially at night in specific pockets in north and central Kolkata and Port areas. The Lalbazaar order has asked senior traffic guards to be visible at important crossings and parking lots of the city, said a source.
