• Ghat clean-up drive in Kolkata starts after Chhath

  • 123 Kolkata: Civic agencies have started cleaning up the ghats along the water bodies across the city after Chhath celebrations ended on Friday morning.

    The KMC solid waste management department and civil engineering department workers were gearing up to clean the major ghats along the Hooghly, where the two-day Chhath rituals were performed. According to a KMC official, Bajekadamtolla (Babughat), Nimtolla Judges Ghat, and Doighat (Kidderpore) are among the heavily used ones.

    In addition, the KMC will need to clean up ponds in Behala, Jadavpur, Tollygunge, and somelocated off EM Bypass. Officials of KMDA, which has 22 permanent ghats and 18 temporary ghats under its purview, said the cleaning up would be done on Saturday.The gates of both Rabindra Sarobar and Subhas Sarobar also reopened from Friday noon. In Duttabad area, the local civic authorities cleaned up the ponds by Friday. KMC and KMDA will also dismantle the artificial ponds and temporary ghats that were created for the devotees.
