Key stretch linking Behala with Tollygunge shuts down for repairs

Kolkata: Santosh Roy Road, a key link between DH Road and James Long Sarani in Sakherbazar, and also Tollygunge, will see a partial traffic block for the next 72 hours to complete some necessary water pipe repair work being carried out by the Kolkata Municipal Corporation.
All heavy traffic, including multiple buses (and even autos if required), will be diverted via the narrower Raja Rammohan Roy Road-Biren Roy Road East, putting pressure on Behala Chowrasta crossing during this period. While 50% of the road will be left untouched for smaller vehicles, police stated they might resort to further diversions if traffic becomes excessively slow.
According to KMC, repair work will simultaneously begin near Merlin Estate at Janakalyan, MMC Primary School located on Santosh Roy Road and the Kali Mandir near Santosh Roy Road.
Buses like S-31, AC-31, 21, and Sakherbazar (Sarada Park)-Anandapur minibus that intend to reach Sakherbazar crossing on DH Road from Muchipara crossing (Siriti) will need to avail Raja Rammohan Roy Road (west-bound)-James Long Sarani crossing and reach Behala Chowrasta crossing. Alternatively, when pressure on traffic is high, they can then take a left turn along James Long Sarani (south-bound) and then take a right turn from James Long Sarani/Janakalyan Crossing (west-bound) on to DH Road. This, claimed police, will help motorists avoid the Behala Chowrasta Crossing.
The police said that with just one road now operational to Tollygunge, they will not allow illegal parking. Over 200 autos are now expected to ply on this alignment, too.
"We are hoping that finally this route will see some speed. We are also hoping that KMC will restore the route as this is an important link to the metro stations from Behala," said Abhishek Saha, a resident of Silpara adjoining Sakherbazar.
