  • 123 Kolkata: Mayor Firhad Hakim on Saturday expressed concern over the erosion of the Hooghly river bank, which resulted in the subsidence of some of the major ghats along the river.

Hakim said municipal commissioner Dhaval Jain wrote a letter to Kolkata Port authorities, requesting them to look into the matter urgently. "After witnessing the growing erosion of the river bank that adversely affected some of the ghats along the Hooghly, we brought the matter to the notice of the port authorities. We want to hold a meeting as soon as possible to resolve the issue," said Hakim.

According to a KMC source, the civic body is particularly worried about the condition of Nimtolla Ghat, which suffered the worst due to erosion. In addition, some of the north Kolkata ghats are also under threat.
