  • Kolkata: West Bengal Commission for Protection of Child Rights has decided to take suo motu cognisance of the incident, in which the parents of a Class IX student at a missionary school in Dum Dum lodged a police complaint, alleging a teacher had verbally abused and mentally harassed their daughter in front of other students and asked her to "get out" of the school without any reason. They also alleged her artwork was thrown away.

"We have taken note of the incident. Cognition needs to be taken and we will address the issue," said WBCPCR chairperson Tulika Das. A letter has reportedly been drafted and the commission will send it to the school, asking the authorities to submit a fact-finding report. "If the incident indeed took place, it is shameful. Even if the student had done something wrong, the teacher could have pointed out the fault or told her about it separately. Under no circumstances is humiliating an adolescent in front of other students acceptable," Das added.

The commission also reportedly plans to visit the school and talk to the principal, teacher, parents and the student. "We can arrange for a hearing if the fact-finding report is not satisfactory," a source said.
