  • Kolkata: A suspected banned cough syrup smuggler, who was hiding under a cluster of water hyacinth in the Ichhamati River, died after he and his accomplice were taken out of the water by BSF personnel. The deceased, Babai Barai, and his aide were sick and shivering. Though the BSF personnel provided them blankets and made them sit next to fire, Barai was declared dead ay a hospital.

The incident took place along the Indo-Bangladesh border.

Despite warnings by BSF, the suspects proceeded towards the international border, subsequently attempting to assault the BSF personnel when confronted.

The BSF jawans discharged a warning shot skyward for protection and deterrence. This prompted two suspects to retreat towards India, whilst their accomplices abandoned their cargo and sought escape via the Ichhamati river. The BSF team conducted a thorough search, recovering 150 Phensedyl bottles from a discarded plastic bag. Further investigation yielded 350 additional Phensedyl bottles and two sharp weapons.

At 4 am, BSF personnel located and detained two suspects concealed amongst water hyacinths in the river. A brief altercation during the arrest resulted in minor injuries to BSF staff. The suspects were taken into custody. Records indicate Barai's previous involvement in smuggling activities.
