• Missing answer scripts: CU offers third option for 65 examinees

  • 12 Kolkata: Of the 120 MA Bengali first-semester examinees, whose answer scripts went missing, Calcutta University will offer a third option to those whose marks had been uploaded to the portal before the corrected scripts went missing. They can accept that marks though they won't be able to go for a revies. For the rest, there will be two options—they can either opt for the highest score from another paper or take a fresh test.

The final decision was taken by the university authorities based on the Oct 29 syndicate resolution, where it was decided that students would be offered options to resolve the matter so the results of approximately 1,000 students could be released. A senior university official said, "Sixty-five answer scripts had been evaluated, and marks were uploaded to the portal before they went missing. So, in that case, they will be given an option to accept the uploaded marks, accepting that they would not avail review as the answer scripts are lost."

For the 54 scripts which got burnt, students would be given two options: accept the highest marks they secured in other papers as the lost Bengali paper's score, or take a fresh test. However, the one script of a student that went missing from an examiner of a north Kolkata college would also be given two options to opt for. The loss of a single script is another matter of concern for the university official, as other scripts of the same packet were intact.

The final decision on declaring results will be made this week, where the results will be declared for these 120 students without handing over marksheets, as they have to choose from the options given by the university. Considering this as an exceptional case, the university will provide option forms to the students, which will be given to the college principals, who will likely be called to the university before handling the letter and option form. "As the issue is too sensitive, we don't want any miscommunication," said a CU official. Sources said these MA students are from four colleges under the university.

The state higher education department has sought an action taken report within seven days, which the university will deposit within a stipulated time period, said an official.
