12345 Kolkata: A young rider was severely injured on the Maa Flyover after getting entangled in a stray kite string on the Park Circus-bound flank above Bridge No. 4.
Police said Ghulam Qadir was wearing a helmet and had a scarf around his neck, which saved him from an even more serious accident. "Thankfully, he had the helmet strapped around his neck and a scarf hanging around his throat. It saved him from his throat getting slit. However, upon impact, he lost his balance, fell off his bike, and hurt his spine," said an officer of Kolkata Police.
According to the police, Qadir, a resident of Mominpur, was returning home when the accident happened in the afternoon. He was helped by police and fellow motorists, who took him to the hospital.
Incidentally, there have been multiple accidents due to stray kite strings on the Maa Flyover in the past. To prevent the same, police have taken a slew of steps, including the installation of wires four feet above the flyover's guard walls and its central median.
Police also carry out timely raids in the localities, alerting sellers in the area not to sell Chinese kite strings, and have conducted multiple awareness campaigns asking bikers to be alert as well.
