12 Kolkata: Preliminary findings into the derailment of Secunderabad-Shalimar Superfast Express on Saturday hinted at a point malfunctioning as the cause.
The TOI report had indicated at the possibility of flawed setting of the point (moving sections on the tracks, controlled by signals) for the derailment. The probe team is believed to have noted that the engine crossed point 26(B) into the main line while the remaining train was diverted to the middle line, leading to the derailment of three coaches.
"After the engine crossed, the point reversed, taking the rest of the train to another track," said an official. "The derailment occurred when the train was crossing an interlocking point, reserved for some malfunction."
"An initial inquiry has fixed responsibility on the signal and telecomm and operating departments for the derailment," he said. tnn
