The trial in the rape and murder of a junior doctor at the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9 started in a Kolkata court on Monday with the victim’s father and neighbour recording their witness statements in an in-camera hearing.
The main accused, Sanjay Roy, a Kolkata Police civic volunteer arrested in connection with the case, was produced before Additional District and Sessions Judge Anirban Das. While coming out of the court, Roy told the reporters that he was framed by senior police officials, including the then Kolkata Police commissioner (Vineet Goyal).
“I have not committed the rape and murder,” he claimed. When asked who committed the crime, he said, “They (senior Kolkata Police officials) know everything.”
“Senior officers are involved in this. The government is backing them. They have been threatening me. I am giving you the names. They are Vineet Goel and DCP Special… They have conspired to frame me into this,” PTI quoted him saying.
The court had last Monday (November 4) framed charges against Roy under Sections 64 (rape punishable with rigorous imprisonment of life term and not less than 10 years), 66 (punishment for causing death or resulting in a persistent vegetative state) and 103/1 (murder punishable with death or imprisonment for life) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
That day too, Roy had claimed in the court, “I am innocent. I was framed. I have not committed the rape and murder…”
The police had arrested Roy a day after the woman doctor’s body was found inside the seminar hall of the hospital.
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), which took over the probe from the Kolkata Police on the direction of the Calcutta High Court after the incident sparked a nationwide outrage, in its 45-page chargesheet submitted to the court has listed 11 pieces of evidence — from forensic to documentary — holding Roy the sole accused in the crime.
The CBI claimed the victim’s blood was found on Roy’s jeans and shoes.
Also, Roy’s hair, and a bluetooth earpiece synced with his cellphone were found from the crime scene.
The report of the swab taken from the area around the crime scene showed presence of Roy’s saliva as confirmed by the DNA report, the central agency said in its chargesheet.

On September 14, the CBI had also arrested Sandip Ghosh, the then principal of R G Kar Medical College, and Abhijit Mondol, the then officer in-charge of the Talal police station, for allegedly tampering with evidence in the case and trying to hush up the incident.
