  • 12 Kolkata: Areas adjoining the city, like Maheshtala and Rajarhat Gopalpur, will soon get house-to-house connection to receive filtered water supply.

The state govt on Monday sanctioned Rs 6.3 crore to Maheshtala Municipality for setting up house-to-house filtered water supply connections from the KMDA's water treatment plant at Akra, with metering arrangements for several households in 24 out of 35 wards of the civic body which covers a large area of Sarengabad, Banerjee Hut, Santoshpur, Nungi, Akra and adjoining areas.

"The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has been supplying water to Maheshtala for a long time. Once this project is completed, filtered water will be supplied from the KMDA's Akra water treatment plant. The govt has set up the infrastructure," said Maheshtala Municipality chairman Dulal Das.

Maheshtala Municipality civic officials said that though they have been receiving water from KMC, the state govt came up with a plan to set up a water treatment plant at Akra for supplying filtered water to Maheshtala, Budge Budge, and Pujali to reduce pressure on KMC.

"A total of 6,900 households will be connected in the first phase, after which more households will be connected. A total of five MGD of water will be supplied once the project is completed," said a civic official. The authorities will engage agencies for setting up house-to-house connections from the main distribution line.
