  • Kolkata: Presidency University signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Geological Survey of India (GSI) on Tuesday for collaborative research and academic activities. The relationship between these two esteemed institutions has been there since the very inception. GSI is said to have laid the foundation of the department of geology in the erstwhile Presidency College.

Interim vice-chancellor Nirmalya Narayan Chakraborty said, "The MoU is a milestone activity. The formalisation of this bond between GSI and PU would greatly benefit students, scholars, and teachers alike, opening up avenues of joint academic activities and participation in GSI national level projects."

Director general of GSI Asit Saha was elated and overwhelmed to sign the MoU with Presidency University. "This academic collaboration would open up areas and avenues to excel in innovative research. New ideas would be generated from working with young research scholars, and that would have a positive impact on the geo science ecosystem," he said.

Focusing on the areas of collaboration, PU registrar Debajyoti Konar said, "Research capacities will advance, and that would be immensely beneficial for the study of earth science in multiple verticals like geological mapping, modelling; landslide hazard studies; seismology; sedimentology, palaeontology; petrology; geothermal energy research, and climate geoscience, to name a few."
