Darjeeling: Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee on Thursday met Bharati Tamang, the widow of Akhil Bharatiya Gorkha League (ABGL) neta Madan Tamang, and her son in Darjeeling. Tamang was killed on May 21, 2010 at Darjeeling's Upper Clubside while overseeing preparations for a public meeting. Bharati has been demanding justice for years now.
In June this year, two criminal petitions were filed, one by Bharati and the other by CBI, challenging an Aug 17, 2017, order by a Kolkata sessions court discharging prime accused and Gorkha Janamukti Morcha neta Bimal Gurung. The Calcutta High Court reinstated Gurung as the accused.
Following Tamang's murder, an FIR was lodged at Darjeeling PS. The FIR implicated 13 individuals, including Gurung. The case was transferred to CID which charged 30 individuals, excluding Gurung.
Dissatisfied with the CID investigation, Bharati filed a writ petition before the HC, seeking transfer of the investigation to CBI. The case was transferred to CBI on Oct 26, 2010.
Bharati could not be contacted for comments on her meeting with the CM.
Earlier, on the concluding day of her trip to Darjeeling, CM Banerjee distributed toys and chocolates to children in a Children's Day programme organized by the district administration, Darjeeling Child Protection Unit and the information and cultural department at Chowrasta.
While taking her regular walk on Thursday, the CM stood for some time at Mall Road, listening to school students playing a Nepali song.
