12 Kolkata: A fence has been erected between Ultadanga and Dum Dum Park along the southern bank of Kestopur canal in Salt Lake to prevent people from dumping waste into it.
The decision to fence the canal bank was earlier taken by a joint committee, comprising officials of urban development and irrigation departments. Officials decided to fence off the canal on the Salt Lake side after completing dredging work to prevent further dumping of waste in the canal.
Dredging and desilting was carried out to increase the canal's stormwater holding capacity. A huge amount of silt was excavated from the canal bed.
"One of the main causes of waterlogging and deluge during heavy rain is the dumping of waste, which makes the water stagnant as the drainage outfalls of the canal get clogged. The stagnant water of the canal also helps in mosquito-breeding," officials said.
The state irrigation department also plans to fence off sections of Bagjola and other canals.
A walkway, along with beautification, has already been carried out on a nearly a 3km-long stretch along the Town Head Cut canal near EM Bypass at Tangra.
