  • 12 Kolkata: Sashan in North 24 Parganas on Monday saw violent clashes between the police and an irate mob over the alleged murder of a 26-year-old youth by his live-in partner.

At least six police personnel, including Sashan police station OC Mohammad Firoz Ali, were injured while a police outpost was ransacked. The agitators also blocked Rajarhat-Kharibari Road, demanding the immediate arrest of those involved in the murder. Nine persons were arrested for their alleged involvement in the attack on cops.

Local residents alleged that police lathicharged the protesters, leaving some of them injured. All those hurt were admitted to Barasat District Medical College and Hospital.

A woman identified as Soma Mondal was arrested in connection with the alleged murder of Alamin Sahaji. According to local sources, Sahaji was found hanging from the ceiling at his house in Sashan's Kharibari on Sunday evening.

Sahaji's family said he had been in a relationship with Mondal for a couple of years. "However, the relationship turned sour, following which he was beaten to death by his live-in partner and her relatives, who later hanged him to make it look like a suicide," claimed Nazmin Sahaji, the victim's cousin.

The family further said that when they went to Sashan police station to file a complaint, cops refused to register it. The police denied these allegations.

"A case has been registered, and we have already arrested a woman on the basis of the complaint lodged by the victim's family. Nine persons were arrested for being involved in the attack on cops," a senior Barasat district police officer said.
