CU missing papers: Almost all opt for highest-marks bonanza

12 Kolkata: The majority of MA Bengali students whose answer scripts went missing have opted for the highest marks as an alternative offered by Calcutta University as the score of the missing paper.
Of the 120 missing answer scripts, 65 had been checked, and marks were uploaded before they went missing. For these 65 scripts, CU offered three options: accept the uploaded marks but forgo the possibility of a review, accept the highest marks scored among the four other papers as the mark for the lost paper, or appear for a fresh test. These students of North Kolkata College opted for the highest-score option instead of accepting uploaded marks. "We had distributed option forms to the students and asked them to select their choice. We had a meeting with them and the department teachers, and the students selected the highest-marks option for the lost paper. We have submitted the option forms to the university," a college official said.
Among the 120 answer scripts, 54 were burnt at the house of the examiner before they were checked. These candidates were given two options. Students from two colleges — one from south Kolkata and another from Howrah — whose answer scripts were among these lost ones, chose the option to accept the highest score among the remaining four papers as the score for the lost paper.
One CU official said, "It was quite natural that the students would opt for the highest score because we knew that hardly any of them could avail themselves of the fresh-test option. It would be considered advantageous for the students, but there was no other option but to offer it."
One hundred and twenty answer scripts of the MA first-semester went missing, prompting the syndicate, the highest decision-making body, to offer options to the students for the loss. The university distributed option forms to the students through the respective colleges to take the final decision to publish their final results.
