  • 123 Kolkata: A hospital in Salt Lake has introduced state-of-the-art robotic-assisted spine surgery. This is the first time that a robot-assisted surgery was done in eastern India, according to HP Ghosh Hospital where the procedure was done. This cutting-edge procedure has already gained popularity in the southern and western parts of the country.

Touted as the future of spine care, this new technology allows a 360-degree view to the surgeons, providing more precision while reducing hospital stays as well as the duration of surgeries by around 50%. Introduced a couple of months ago, at least 16 patients underwent the procedure at the hospital, which gave the team the confidence to come out with its results.

"We are not only introducing cutting-edge technology but also setting a new standard in spine care in Eastern India. The Mazor-X Robotic System allows us to perform surgeries with unparalleled precision, ensuring safer outcomes for patients, particularly in complex cases. This event marks a new era for spine surgery in our region," said Saumyajit Basu, director and lead spine surgeon of The Spine Foundation, and Somnath Bhattacharya, CEO of HP Ghosh Hospital.

"In conventional spine surgeries, it can take four to five days of hospital stay post-procedure, which is cut down by around 50% in the robot-assisted surgery," said anaesthesiologist Trinanjan Sarangi, a team member of the spine surgery team that includes Basu, Indrajit Roy, and Amitava Biswas.

While the cost of the surgery is about 20% higher than the conventional one, doctors said this cost will also come down once the number of surgeries increases.
