12 Kolkata: An elephant of a herd that entered Bengal from Odisha killed a villager in Jhargram's Nayagram on Thursday. The deceased Badal Murmu, 38, was from Khudgar village.
According to forest department and locals, early on Thursday, the herd of about 54-55 elephants entered Baligeria beat of Kesharekha range under Kharagpur forest division. As news spread, people gathered in Khudgar to protect their crops. Amid this, Murmu came in front of one of the elephants, which attacked him. He was taken to Nayagram Super Specialty Hospital, where he died. Kharagpur DFO Manish Yadav said compensation would be provided to the family.
Seven elephants have been roaming the Nayagram range and three the Kesharekha range for several days. The entry of an additional 54-55 elephants from Odisha has caused panic among locals.
