12 Kolkata: Arpita Mukherjee, a prime accused in the cash-for-jobs scam and a close associate of former state education minister Partha Chatterjee, was on Thursday granted two-day parole a day after her mother passed away.
Mukherjee, accompanied by police, returned to her home at Belgharia's Dewanpara in a prison van to complete her mother's last rites.
Minati Mukherjee (76) had been living alone at the house since her daughter's arrest in July 2022 and suffered from age-related ailments.
"On Thursday, a special court in the Bankshall received a plea for Mukherjee's parole following her mother's demise. The court granted her two days' parole, and its directive was sent to the superintendent of the Alipore Women's Correctional Home," a senior lawyer said.
According to police sources, Mukherjee was taken out of the jail around 5.30pm on Thursday. Some senior police officers from the Barrackpore commissionerate accompanied her. Around 7.45pm, Mukherjee arrived at her house, where only a few relatives and neighbours were present. Some of them tried to console her.
"I am deeply shocked by my mother's death. It is a profound loss for me, and I can't express my sorrow in words. I cannot speak any further," Mukherjee told reporters.
"I only had brief conversations with my mother after my arrest," she added.
