  • Kolkata: A domestic help was arrested on Thursday for a series of thefts at her employer's condo on Kalikapur Road.

The accused had worked at the flat for eight years and had won the confidence and trust of her employers. However, around Durga Puja earlier this year, the employers realized that too many thefts had taken place in their residence and the evidence pointed to an insider being involved.

They approached Garfa Police and requested a thorough probe.

"It was reported that on Oct 10, several gold and silver ornaments, including two gold necklaces, five pairs of earrings, a bangle and five rings, were stolen from the flat of Rita Das. On investigation, sleuths discovered that the maid was stealing jewellery little by little over the past six of the eight years that she had been employed," said an officer at Lalbazar. Subsequently, the police arrested the accused maid in the Survey Park area.

After interrogating her, cops recovered a significant portion of the stolen jewellery. The accused was sent to three days' police custody by the Alipore court on Thursday. The police said a probe is on to try and recover the remaining lost items.

"We checked CCTV footage and made noticeable progress in the case," a police officer said.

The victim's family could not be contacted for their reactions.
