123456 Kolkata: Two Satyajit Ray Film and Television Institute (SRFTI) alumni — director Christo Tomy and sound designer Dhiman Karmakar— made it to this year's BAFTA Breakthrough cohortrevealed on Thursday. A total of 43 creatives, ranging from film, games, to television domains, in the UK, US, and India are part of the cohort. From India, nine creatives have been selected.
This one-year-long programme for the BAFTA Breakthrough cohort offers one-to-one meetings and career guidance, access to BAFTA events and screenings, as well as networking events internationally, in various domains like costume design, production, casting, editing, games design, performance, directing, composing, and cinematography.
"This is a great moment for the institute," said SRFTI director, Samiran Dutta. "I feel immensely grateful that BAFTA recognised my work in Amar Singh Chamkila as a breakthrough project," said Karmakar, adding that it was challenging to do live recording of musical performances for a fiction film and creating the sound design of a period film.
Tomy's breakthrough project is ‘Curry and Cyanide: The Jolly Joseph Case'. " I always wanted to take my stories to the world. This is a huge opportunity ," Tomy said. He lauded SRFTI for providing all facilities to make films when he was a student. "The institute helped me learn my craft and submerge me into the realm of cinema. I thank my alma mater," Tomy said.
