Kolkata: More than a hundred underprivileged students had free-wheeling conversations with mayor Firhad Hakim during a special interactive session of ‘Talk To Mayor Uncle' at KMC House on Saturday.
From the dangers of electrocution on flooded streets to plastic menace and lack of playgrounds, issues raised by the students caught the mayor's attention. Hakim gave a patient hearing to the girl from Dhapa Mathpukur area — a waterlogging-prone zone — who couldn't forget how a neighbour was electrocuted a couple of years back asthe area was flooded after a downpour.
Another student from a govt school in Behala pointed out the damaging role of plastics in choking the city's underground drainage system. While appreciating the concern expressed by the student, Hakim said he had written to the state environment department to check uncontrolled use of banned plastic carry bags. A 6-year-old student complained about a dearth of playgrounds on the school premises. The interaction was organized by the Child In Need Institute .
