  • Kolkata: The West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (WBNUJS) received Rs 1 crore from the state to honour Justice Radha Binod Pal, the only Indian judge at the ‘Tokyo Trials' of Japanese war crimes during World War II. A jurist from Calcutta High Court, Pal was part of the International Military Tribunal for the Far East conducted by the Allies for the atrocities committed by the Japanese. He was the only judge to give a dissenting vote against the tribunal's verdict. WBNUJS VC Nirmal Kanti Chakrabarti said the fund would be used on a lecture series and publish a book on Pal. His grandson, Sudhi Binod Pal, said his family would request the Centre to preserve a few artefacts of Justice Pal at Victoria Memorial. They urged the state to rename Beadon Street, where Justice Pal lived, and a park opposite his New Alipore home after him.
