  • Kolkata: A Class IX student died after jumping from the roof of their fifth-floor flat in a New Barrackpore housing complex on Monday morning. The student took the fatal leap reportedly following an argument with her mother, who scolded her for being engrossed in her smartphone during study hours. The police are, however, investigating to determine the exact circumstances that led to the death.

"Prima facie, it appears that Paroshmita Mazumdar, a Class IX student of a reputable English-medium school in Barrackpore Cantonment, killed herself after being scolded by her mother for ignoring her studies and staying hooked to the mobile phone.IPL 2025 mega auctionIPL Auction Live: CSK, RCB, MI apply finishing touches to their squadIPL Auction 2025: Who got whomIPL 2025 Auction: Updated Full Team SquadsThe body has been sent for an autopsy. According to local sources, the girl had an argument with her mother the previous night over some issue. After being scolded by her mother, she went silent and went to her room to sleep. "On Monday morning, her father, Pradip Mazumdar, left for work, her brother went to college and her mother was busy with household chores. During this time, the girl went up to the roof of their fifth-floor flat and jumped off," a close relative of the victim said.

Hearing a loud thud, neighbours and passersby rushed in to find the girl lying in a pool of blood. She was rushed to the Barasat District Medical College and Hospital but doctors declared her dead.

According to locals, the family bought the apartment and moved to this area a few years ago. "The girl used to go to her school with her mother. She was very gentle and calm in nature. We never imagined that she could take such a drastic step only for being reprimanded by her mother," said Sharmistha Mukherjee, a neighbour.
