12 Kolkata: A 13-year-old boy, Debojit Dey, was injured and admitted to hospital on Monday morning after the two-wheeler he was riding pillion on was hit by an auto in the Kasba area on the Rashbehari connector. Cops said Dey's father was taking him to school but the teen had no helmet on when the accident occured around 9.15 am near the Bakultala Crossing.
An officer said, "The signal was red on the Rashbehari connector and while trying to take advantage of it, the two-wheeler rider turned onto a side lane.IPL 2025 mega auctionIPL Auction 2025: Who went where and for how muchIPL 2025: Complete list of players of each franchiseHowever, while doing so, the signal turned green, and the auto operator — plying between Ruby and Gariahat — picked up speed and collided with the two-wheeler. Dey lost balance and fell on the middle of the road. He sustained injuries and was admitted to Ruby Hospital. He was later discharged after doctors stated he was out of danger. However, his family might have admitted him to another hospital."
"The fact that the doctors wanted to keep Dey under observation was because he was not wearing a helmet. We have decided to issue a stern warning to his parents regarding their negligence towards their child's safety," said an officer from Kasba Police.
"We have started addressing parents across multiple schools about the need to wear a helmet and be responsible for their child's safety. Not wearing a helmet puts the child at risk, is what we tell parents," said an ACP.
Helmets are now compulsory for all children, even under the age of four who are riding pillion on a two-wheeler.
