Roy, a former Tripura and Meghalaya governor, referred to the BJP state president Sukanta Majumdar as a “part-time president”. He further asserted that the “inaction regarding clearly provable cases” against Trinamool Congress leader Abhishek Banerjee had led the public to believe there was an understanding between Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and the BJP central leadership. Analysing the bypoll results, he stated that the BJP has no hope in the state unless the situation changes.
The ruling TMC comfortably won the six Assembly seats that went to bypoll, including Madarihat, which had elected the BJP in 2016 and 2021.
The bypolls on November 13 were conducted in Sitai (Scheduled Castes), Madarihat (Scheduled Tribes), Naihati, Haroa, Midnapore, and Taldangra due to the incumbents being elected to the Lok Sabha earlier this year. The TMC had won all five of these seats, except for Madarihat, during the 2021 elections.
In a long social media post on his X, Roy wrote, “Expected rout of a demoralized party in West Bengal bye-elections. CPI(M) and Congress reduced to irrelevancy. What explains the West Bengal results? We know that bye-election results are no indicators, but is that the complete answer? No!.”
“West Bengal BJP is a tottering house that continues to be the 2nd party in the state, not because of its organization but by blind support of a section of the Hindu public. It is unimaginable that in a state like West Bengal the BJP is run by a part-time president who doubles as a Minister of State at centre,” wrote Roy in the post.

“Inaction in the face of clearly provable cases against Abhishek have convinced the people that there is understanding between Mamata and the central leadership. Unless this is reversed BJP has no hope in the state. Mamata has crafted a narrative that BJP is a Hindi-speaking anti-Bengali party. Unless a counter-narrative is devised, Mamata will rule West Bengal forever,” he added.
